Organic and Biological Analytical Chemistry

OBiAChem, University of Liège

The Organic and Biological Analytical Chemistry Group (OBiAChem) of the Chemistry Department of the University of Liège is conducting research in the field of method development for separation and identification of (semi)volatile molecules.

The expertise is mainly concentrated on the hyphenation of comprehensive two-dimensional gas chromatography (GCxGC) to all types of mass spectrometric (MS) analyzers. The group is recognized as a leader in offering GCxGC-MS based solutions to practical separation science challenges in various fields of applications. These method developments are backed up by a number of fundamental studies performed in the group as well.

Biography

Jef Focant, is very active at the institutional level and combines this with a strong career outside the university (chairman of a 1100 participants conference on dioxins, chairman of a scholarship granting committee, participation in EU-projects,…). He is recognized as a world leading expert on Persistent Organic Pollutants and a recognized pioneer of GC×GCTOFMS approaches. He also is a co-founder of MS Expertise, a spin-off company of the ULiege. He is the youngest recipient of the recently awarded ‘GC×GC Life Achievement Award’.
